Description:
There may be a requirement to produce multiple lists from a template. This article covers how you can do this without having to create the lists individually by creating lists from a single template or from multiple different templates all at the same time.
See also Create a list template to find out how to go about setting up templates.

This article covers two ways to create multiple lists from a single, or many, templates:
- By selecting multiple templates
- By uploading a .csv file with a matrix of lists to be created
- This is a browser-only feature and cannot be accessed via the Insite app for iOS or Android.
Guide:
1. By selecting multiple templates
1.1. From the home screen go to Your project - see Create a project.
1.2. Once you have opened your project tap the Templates card under the Lists heading.
1.3. Tap on the Template actions button in the left-hand corner of the bottom toolbar. Choose Create lists from selection from the list of actions to reveal the checkboxes.
1.4. Select the template(s) that you would like to produce some lists from and when you are done tap on the ✓ which is now in the left-hand corner of the bottom toolbar.
1.5. You will now be presented with the Create lists from templates page. You will find a heading for each of the templates that you checked with a list of Lists to create underneath. Each list will contain one List to create that is automatically populated with the template's name.
1.6. From here, you can edit the names of the lists to be created by tapping on them and re-typing as required.
1.7. To create multiple lists from the same template, use Another list +. Again, you can update the name as required.
1.8. When you are happy with the names of the lists to be created, tap the ✓ in the top right of the page. You will be redirected to the project's lists where the new lists will be generated.
2. By uploading a .csv file with a matrix of lists to be created
Notes:
- This is a browser-only feature and cannot be accessed via the Insite app for iOS or Android.
- This method allows you to define your lists externally so that you could template a standard project structure for re-use.
- These file formats can be created by exporting data from a spreadsheet. For an example see: Import or export text (.txt or .csv) files.
- You cannot directly use a spreadsheet file, it must be exported to .csv format. The file must be in the following format:
- A header row containing
- template_name (required)
- list_name (required)
- reference (optional)
- images_require_gps_coordinates (optional)
- status_group (optional)
- tag_n (optional)
- Row under the header representing each new list to be created which defines which template they should be created from and their details
- A header row containing
template_name |
list_name | reference | images_require_gps_coordinates | status_group | tag_1 |
Template name 1 | List name 1 | ABC-123 | N | Compliance | H&S |
Template name 2 | List name 2 | ABC-456 | Y | Progress | Snagging |
2.1. From the home screen go to Your project - see Create a project.
2.2. Once you have opened your project, click the Templates card under the Lists heading.
2.3. Click on the Actions button in the toolbar to the top of the page. Choose Create lists: Using .csv file from the list of actions.
2.4. You will now be presented with the Import lists using CSV page. From here, you can download a template for the CSV import file. This will include an example list for each of the templates of your project.
2.5. After updating the CSV template file to match the lists that you wish to create, drop the file into the white box or click Choose to open your file explorer and find the file.
2.5a. If the headers in your CSV file do not match the standard format, you will be presented with apage where you can match the columns in your file with the Insite list fields. Use the dropdown boxes on the right-hand side to choose which Insite fields the columns in your file should apply to.
2.6. You will be presented with a table where you can review the lists that are about to be completed. As per the format of the import file, each row represents a new list and the first column, Template name, indicates the template that each list will be created from.
2.7. From here, you can edit all of the details of your new lists apart from the tags. You can also remove lists using the ✕ at the end of each row.
2.8. When you are happy with the details of the lists to be created, click on Create lists in the bottom right of the page. You will be redirected to the project's lists where the new lists will be generated.
